Roll top desks were originally designed for writing. However with the increase in popularity of home computers, roll tops have now been redesigned to accommodate more modern needs.

Whilst these desks certainly do provide an attractive option to those who like more traditional looking furniture, they are not very well suited for computer use.

Most designs have a relatively small working surface area, as they have to accommodate the roll top covering. And because their working horizontal surface is not completely exposed, this can make wiring troublesome and/or messy.

Another problem with roll top desks is that many use cupboards as a means of concealing your computer which reduces circulating air flow around it, possibly causing your computer to overheat.

Child Computer Desks

Desks used to be designed solely for adults, however now that computer users are becoming younger and younger, computer desks have now also been designed for children.

This is an extremely important advancement in desk design, as larger computer desks are simple too large for young children to use comfortably, and may result in neck, back and eye strain in the young child.
